TECH OVERVIEW OF PERKINS 4.182 

DIESEL ENGINE 

The Perkins (Variety Perkins) designed 4.182 diesel engine was built under licence by Mazda in Japan. As a Mazda diesel it was known as the HA series Mazda Diesel and was termed the 3000 model in Mazda vehicles (3.0L). The 4.182 belongs to the 200 series family of Perkins Diesel Engines which include the Perkins 4.135 (Mazda S2) and 4.154 

(Mazda XA) . There is a commonality of parts and the engine prefixes to indicate the engine type are, GA (4.135), GB (4.154) and GC (4.182). The engine number is stamped on a machined pad above the fuel injection pump. It is a conservatively rated engine originally designed for light to medium trucks. There is a power take off facility from the front crankshaft pulley. 

It is a high specification 4 cylinder indirect injection diesel engine, renowned for its reliability and longevity. Its head is designed for crossflow to aid combustion efficiency together with a swirl type precombustion chamber (Ricardo combustion chamber) . It has a 5 bearing forged crankshaft and 3 ringed pistons with a Niresist top ring. The pistons have oil jet cooling. There is a built-in plate oil cooler to aid transfer of heat from the engine oil to the cooling system. The overhead valves are designed to rotate to provide a longer lasting seating. The timing gears are helical steel. The independent aluminium branch type intake manifold increases intake efficiency. The fuel injection system is a Bosch VE distributor pump, manufactured under licence by Diesel Kiki in Japan, with a solenoid valve so the engine can be stopped via the ignition switch.

The Perkins 4.182 is a much better engine than the old Series 3 diesel and produces 146lb ft (198Nm) torque and 85bhp (63.5kW) as opposed to a Series Diesel 103lb ft and 63bhp.
